The movie my group were chosen to
analyse was Romeo and Juliet. It is a romance as well as a tragedy based
teenage movie. This film consists of various binary oppositions however gang
and rivalry is a prime example. From just the opening of the film, sound, mise
en scene, camera work and editing is all used to emphasise this binary
opposition of the two gangs: Capulets and Montagues.
The sounds used when
introducing the two different gangs are very contrasting. When the Montagues
enter the scene, very loud rock music is playing in their car. However, the
Capulets enter with enigmatic, mystical music which promptly shows the audience
the Capulets are more intimidating. When the two gangs meet the music used is
sharp which suggests a 'civil brawl' may be taking place.
The Mise en scene shows a clear comparison between the Capulets
and Montagues through the use of props, costume, lighting and other aspects of
Mise en scene. The clothing which the Montagues are seen in throughout is very
bright, unkempt and casual whereas, the Capulets are dressed in
refined, sophisticated, dark clothing. This suggests that the Montagues
are not serious and are just having an enjoyable time. On the other hand, the
Capulets look quite dangerous and aggressive. Furthermore, the cars in which
both opposing families are found in also emphasise this. The Capulets drive in
dark, sleek race cars whereas the Montagues drive in bright cars. Both gangs
have their gang names engraved onto their guns which allows the audience to
take the Montagues more seriously.
The camera work is also used to show present the binary opposition of rivalry. Extreme close ups of the opposing gang's eyes are shown which create an intense atmosphere. Also, a two shot is used of the leader from the Montague and Capulets gang showing them dropping their guns and putting their hands up as ordered by the police. This allows the audience to see the difference between the two in terms of clothing as well as body language. The Capulets body posture is more upright and muscular in comparison to the Montague.
Finally editing is used to establish the two gangs. Shot-reverse shot is used
when showing the main leaders of the Capulets and Montagues. This is allows us
to see the difference between the two characters in terms of
physical appearance and dialogue. Slow motion of when the Capulets
leader is shooting a Montague trying to get away from the brawl is done to
create intensity, apprehensive tone for the audience. It also suggests that the
Capulets are more aggressive and frightening.
